The 1954 Franklin Half Dollar (Buy on eBay) was the last year that the series was produced at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints. For the next two years of the series, production would only take place at the Philadelphia Mint. After this point, production would take place at both Philadelphia and Denver until the conclusion of the series.
As opposed to the conditional rarity seen in the previous year, all of this year’s issues are more or less obtainable, even in gem grades with full bell lines. The most sharply struck coins are those from Denver, although these may exhibit bag marks. The 1954-S is the most weakly struck, although there are a good number of pieces certified with full bell lines.
The United States Mint continued to offer uncirculated mint sets and proof sets that contained Franklin Half Dollars. The popularity of these products had grown compared to previous years. The Mint Sets can be a source of higher grade or attractively toned half dollars. The Proof Sets were the only source of the proof half dollars struck at Philadelphia.
